I recently got an interesting email from an influencer:
“I don’t know if you still guest post. But if you do I would love to have you guest post on my site for my audience.”
Why is it interesting?
Well, exactly 12 months before that message I had placed them on my dream list of influencers to guest post with.
And here THEY PITCHED ME to guest post!
Was I any less awesome in the 12 months prior? No, I was just as much of a rock star. 🙂
The only thing that changed was their trust in my competence and abilities.
Winning trust (and a guest post) with bloggers starts with the right guest post pitch email.
How to win a blogger’s trust with your guest post pitch email
There are five steps to winning a blogger’s trust with your guest post pitch email.
Step #1 Demonstrate a long-term commitment
You do this by mentioning a useful insight you received from an old post of theirs. The subtext here is you have been following their work for a long time and therefore are unlikely to do something against their values.
Step #2 Use your likable superpower
All of us have a likable superpower–aka the trait that makes people love us and want to be our friends.
For some people, it is the ability to inject fun and humor. For others, it may be the ability to tell fascinating stories.
My likable superpower is the ability to provide thoughtful praise that shows a deep understanding of a person’s work.
Whatever your likable superpower is, use it in your pitch email.
Here is an example of mine in action:
Step #3: Establish credibility
One of the quickest ways to establish credibility is by sharing guest posts you have written.
Here is an example:
If you don’t have any guest posts already out there you can achieve a similar effect with step #4.
Step #4: Share their audience’s problem and your solution
This is where you can show your knowledge of the blogger’s audience by highlighting their unresolved problems.
Once you have done this you can position your potential guest post as the solution.
Here is an example:
Step #5: Offer to go the extra mile
It goes without saying that the best blogger’s to guest post with are the busiest bloggers. Which is why:
Winning a guest post isn’t just about your pitch idea. It is also about your willingness to save a blogger work.
One way to do this is offering to share the post with them in HTML, with relevant images and graphics.
Here is what that would look like in your pitch email.
Protip: People often tell me the post HTML is too much extra work. To which I say if that is the only thing holding you back, check out Wordable (helps you generate HTML from your google docs in less than a minute).
Now it is your turn.
